BEST CHEAP BREAKFAST IN SOUTH SURREY
Myles Murchison
Over the past 25 years, I’ve eaten in every breakfast joint in South Surrey and, unlikely as it is, for my money, the best cheap breakfast you can buy is cheerfully served at Fatburger.
You probably think of Fatburger as a working class alternative to McDonald’s, the less famous across-the-street franchise that serves bigger and messier burgers in a decor that seems to celebrate the 50s. It’s that, for sure, but it also puts out a breakfast that might surprise you.
First, the price is right. You get a couple eggs, a couple sausages (or bacon), excellent crispy hash browns, a couple slices of buttered toast and very good coffee, with refills at no extra cost – all for less than ten bucks. ($9.40 including coffee and tax, to be exact.)
It’s called the Large Breakfast, which is a bit of an overstatement, but maybe because I’m a Senior and no longer want to burrow into those mighty Yukon breakfasts served up at places like the old Tomahawk in North Vancouver, I find the amount of food just right.
For a little more money, you can order XL or XXL breakfasts with pancakes and more sausage and bacon if you like, but for moderate appetites the L is lots.
A couple other nice things. Unlike most fast food places where you carry your breakfast from the counter to the table, at Fatburger once you order at the counter you’re served breakfast personally at your table by Mukesh Bharti, the owner, or one of his hired servers – who drop by later, coffee pot in hand. (I normally leave a small tip at the table, just like I would at a regular restaurant.)
And I should mention the bathrooms are very clean, bright, graffiti-free, large and heated.
There is one major disadvantage. At present, Fatburger doesn’t open until 10:30 a.m. – which is, of course, the first time of the day you can have breakfast there. Fortunately, breakfast is served all day to about 4.00 for those of us who like breakfast just as much for lunch or an early dinner.
